Where do I find my vehicle’s VIN (chassis number)?
The VIN is in field E of the registration certificate, on the manufacturer’s plate (door pillar or engine bay) and, on most cars, at the bottom of the windscreen on the driver’s side. It always has 17 characters and never contains the letters I, O or Q.

The vehicle identification number (VIN, or chassis number) is unique. You will find it:
- on the registration certificate, field E, whatever the European country of origin;
- on the manufacturer’s plate, usually riveted to the driver’s door pillar or in the engine bay;
- stamped or visible at the bottom of the windscreen, driver’s side, on most passenger cars;
- on a motorcycle, stamped on the steering head or the frame;
- on a trailer or caravan, on the plate fixed to the drawbar or chassis.
The VIN has 17 characters: three letters identifying the manufacturer (WMI), then the vehicle description and a serial number. The letters I, O and Q are excluded to avoid confusion with 1 and 0. If in doubt, our free check validates the format and identifies the manufacturer before any order.
