Seat builds most of its range in Martorell, near Barcelona, and Spain is unsurprisingly among the first countries of origin in our Seat files — often fleet or ex-rental vehicles resold after three years.
The point to watch is the shift to Cupra. Since 2018 the sporting versions have left the Seat badge to become Cupra models in their own right. On transition-year cars the foreign registration document may carry either name, sometimes “Seat Cupra” as a single string. The commercial name is worthless for retrieving the approval file: only the VIN counts. Tell us the exact wording on your document and we will do the matching.
The recurring file is a Spanish Ibiza or Leon, an ex-rental or fleet car, bought cheaply because the seller has no certificate. That is precisely the profile our service exists for. On a Seat we systematically check two things. First the designation on the Spanish document, which may read Seat, Cupra or both depending on the model year — we work from the VIN, not the name. Then age: the oldest Ibiza and Alhambra models are approaching the point beyond which the manufacturer no longer has an obligation to issue. We query the type-approval department before invoicing you, and we tell you plainly if the answer is uncertain.

Where to find the chassis number (VIN) on a Seat
A certificate covers one vehicle only, identified by its chassis number (VIN). The safest place to read it is field E of the foreign registration document. On a Seat, it also appears:
- at the base of the windscreen, driver’s side, readable from outside
- on the manufacturer’s plate on the driver’s door pillar
- copied into the service book
A VIN never contains the letters I, O or Q: mistaking one for a 1 or a 0 is enough to send the search astray.

Seat and the eCOC: what changes in 2026
Since 5 July 2026, Seat has been sending conformity data for its new vehicles to the approval authorities in eCOC format. Your used Seat is not affected: you need the ordinary COC, issued exactly as before. Paper and printouts of the eCOC remain accepted until 29 November 2026 at the latest. Understand the eCOC.
Watch-outs for an imported Seat
Different name depending on the country
Your foreign registration document may name the Seat under a commercial name you do not recognise, or under a type designation. Rely on the VIN and the type code (field D.2), never on the marketing name.
Vehicle more than 10 years old
Article 36 of Regulation (EU) 2018/858 only requires the manufacturer to supply a duplicate for 10 years after the date of manufacture. Beyond that it is at their discretion. We check availability before invoicing anything, particularly on older Seat Ibiza and Leon.
Vehicle modified after leaving the factory
The certificate describes the Seat as it left the production line. Non-approved wheels, lowered suspension, tow bar, aftermarket exhaust: none of it appears on the document. The certificate stays valid, but it does not cover the modification — a common point on Ibiza and Leon.
