Why do you need a certificate of conformity for your Audi?
If you bought your Audi in another European Union country, the Audi certificate of conformity is required to register it. It proves the vehicle conforms to the type approved by Audi at European level.

The Audi vehicles that reach us are on average more heavily equipped than other imports. Option packs, large wheels, adaptive suspension, upgraded brakes: from a type-approval point of view, none of this is cosmetic.
Those options change the gross weights, the tyre sizes and sometimes the top speed recorded on the certificate. And that is exactly what the registration office compares against the actual vehicle. An A6 Avant on 20-inch wheels will not carry the same values as a base A6, and any gap between certificate and vehicle stalls the file. Send us the VIN rather than the seller’s advert: only the VIN describes the car that actually left the factory.
The typical file is an A4 or Q5 from a German fleet, three to five years old, resold by a dealer. The certificate never left the leasing company, and the dealer has no particular reason to supply it. We request it from the group directly using the VIN. What we verify before submitting an Audi request is the consistency between options and approved values. An A6 with the S line pack, 20-inch wheels and air suspension does not carry the same weights or tyre sizes as the entry-level version. If the buyer sends us the advert rather than the registration document, the discrepancy surfaces at the end of the file — too late. So we always ask for the foreign registration document, not the seller’s description.

Where to find the chassis number (VIN) on a Audi
A certificate covers one vehicle only, identified by its chassis number (VIN). The safest place to read it is field E of the foreign registration document. On a Audi, it also appears:
- at the base of the windscreen, driver’s side, readable from outside
- on the manufacturer’s plate on the driver’s door pillar
- stamped under the bonnet, on the front crossmember
A VIN never contains the letters I, O or Q: mistaking one for a 1 or a 0 is enough to send the search astray.

What to watch out for on an imported Audi
Equipment specific to the country of sale
A Audi sold from Germany and from Austria does not always carry the same equipment or the same tyre sizes as elsewhere. The certificate reflects the vehicle’s actual configuration, not your local brochure.
Grey-market version
Some Audi vehicles were built for a non-EU market and later re-imported. Their approval is not European, the VIN reveals it, and the manufacturer will refuse to issue a certificate. We check this systematically before quoting.
Vehicle modified after leaving the factory
The certificate describes the Audi as it left the production line. Non-approved wheels, lowered suspension, tow bar, aftermarket exhaust: none of it appears on the document. The certificate stays valid, but it does not cover the modification — a common point on A3 and A4.
Audi and the eCOC: what changes in 2026
Since 5 July 2026, Audi has been sending conformity data for its new vehicles to the approval authorities in eCOC format.
