Why do you need a certificate of conformity for your Land Rover?

If you bought your Land Rover in another European Union country, the Land Rover certificate of conformity is required to register it. It proves the vehicle conforms to the type approved by Land Rover at European level.

We obtain it from Land Rover and deliver it as a digital copy by e-mail, with the paper original by post on request.

Land Rover builds in the United Kingdom, which places a share of its used vehicles under the non-EU import regime since Brexit, with separate customs formalities.

The criterion is not the place of manufacture but the country of first registration: a Discovery registered new in Germany follows the usual European procedure, while a Defender registered in the United Kingdom after 1 January 2021 falls under third-country import. Second point specific to the brand: Defender and Discovery were widely sold in commercial versions — Commercial, Hard Top — approved as N1 depending on the market. The category is in field J of the registration document.

The typical file is a Discovery Sport or Evoque bought in Belgium or the Netherlands whose buyer does not know the country of first registration. The continental seller has sometimes imported it from the United Kingdom. On a Land Rover our first check is therefore the country and date of first registration, which determine whether the file follows the European route or the third-country import regime. Our second check concerns the category: Defender and Discovery were widely sold in Commercial or Hard Top versions, approved as commercial vehicles depending on the market, with a reduced number of seats. These vehicles are also often equipped after sale — tyres, suspension, protection — and the certificate does not cover those additions.

For a Land Rover, the request usually goes through the national importer of the country of first registration: one more link in the chain, so a longer turnaround.

Where to find the chassis number (VIN) on a Land Rover

A certificate covers one vehicle only, identified by its chassis number (VIN). The safest place to read it is field E of the foreign registration document. On a Land Rover, it also appears:

  • at the base of the windscreen, driver’s side, readable from outside
  • on the manufacturer’s plate on the driver’s door pillar
  • stamped under the bonnet, on the front crossmember

A VIN never contains the letters I, O or Q: mistaking one for a 1 or a 0 is enough to send the search astray.

Most frequently imported Land Rover models

The Land Rover vehicles we handle most often come from Germany, from Belgium and from the Netherlands.

The requests we receive mostly concern:

  • Land Rover Defender
  • Land Rover Discovery
  • Land Rover Range Rover
  • Land Rover Range Rover Evoque
  • Land Rover Discovery Sport

The rest of the EU-approved Land Rover range is handled the same way.

What to watch out for on an imported Land Rover

Vehicle coming from the United Kingdom

Since Brexit the UK is a third country: a Land Rover first registered there after 1 January 2021 counts as a non-EU import, with separate customs formalities. The certificate can still be requested if the vehicle was type-approved to European standards.

Vehicle modified after leaving the factory

The certificate describes the Land Rover as it left the production line. Non-approved wheels, lowered suspension, tow bar, aftermarket exhaust: none of it appears on the document. The certificate stays valid, but it does not cover the modification — a common point on Defender and Discovery.

Bodywork or multi-stage conversion

Motorhome, refrigerated box, tipper, ambulance: approval was granted in several stages. Land Rover then issues the certificate for the base chassis only; the conversion document comes from the body builder and must be requested from them.

Land Rover and the eCOC: what changes in 2026

Since 5 July 2026, Land Rover has been sending conformity data for its new vehicles to the approval authorities in eCOC format. Your used Land Rover is not affected: you need the ordinary COC, issued exactly as before. Paper and printouts of the eCOC remain accepted until 29 November 2026 at the latest. Understand the eCOC.
