Why do you need a certificate of conformity for your Mitsubishi?

Mitsubishi announced in 2020 that it would scale back development of new models for Europe. The vehicle population in circulation remains large — Outlander, ASX, Space Star — and type-approval data remains accessible.
The most frequent technical point concerns the L200, a pick-up approved as a commercial vehicle: different category, a gross weight that can approach the limits of category N1, and licence and roadworthiness rules that are not those of a passenger car. On first-generation plug-in hybrid Outlanders, some authorities now ask for battery data that was not systematically recorded on the certificates of the time.
The frequent file is an Outlander or ASX bought in Germany or the Netherlands, for which the data remains accessible but goes through a lighter organisation than before. The turnaround is slightly less predictable, and we say so up front. On a Mitsubishi our first check concerns the L200 where that is the model: a pick-up approved as a commercial vehicle, with a gross weight that can approach the limits of its category and distinct licence and roadworthiness rules. On first-generation plug-in hybrid Outlanders our question concerns the battery data, now sometimes required and not systematically recorded on the certificates of the time.

Where to find the chassis number (VIN) on a Mitsubishi
A certificate covers one vehicle only, identified by its chassis number (VIN). The safest place to read it is field E of the foreign registration document. On a Mitsubishi, it also appears:
- at the base of the windscreen, driver’s side, readable from outside
- on the manufacturer’s plate on the driver’s door pillar
- under a floor flap on the front passenger side
A VIN never contains the letters I, O or Q: mistaking one for a 1 or a 0 is enough to send the search astray.

Range reduced or withdrawn from Europe
Mitsubishi has scaled back its European presence. Type-approval data remains accessible but goes through a smaller organisation: longer turnaround and a less predictable answer on older models.
Gross weight and driving licence category
Depending on the version, a Mitsubishi can exceed 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight and move into category N2: licence required, speed limits and roadworthiness regime all change. The weight is in field F.2 of the registration document.
Japanese-market versions not approved in Europe
Some Mitsubishi vehicles on European roads are Japanese domestic-market versions imported outside the official network. They have no European type approval and no certificate can be issued. The VIN settles it immediately.
Mitsubishi and the eCOC: what changes in 2026
Since 5 July 2026, Mitsubishi has been sending conformity data for its new vehicles to the approval authorities in eCOC format.
