Why do you need a certificate of conformity for your Mercedes-Benz?
If you bought your Mercedes-Benz in another European Union country, the Mercedes-Benz certificate of conformity is required to register it. It proves the vehicle conforms to the type approved by Mercedes-Benz at European level.

Mercedes-Benz covers two very different worlds in our files. On one side the passenger cars — A-Class, C-Class, E-Class, GLA, GLC — where the procedure is straightforward. On the other, one of the most heavily converted commercial ranges in Europe.
A Sprinter turned into a motorhome, a Vito converted into a shuttle, a V-Class fitted out for wheelchair transport: in every one of these cases approval was granted in several stages. Mercedes-Benz then documents only the base chassis, as it left the factory. The conversion certificate is a separate document, to be requested from the body builder who carried out the work. Tell us from the start whether your vehicle was converted: it changes what we can obtain.
The most frequent file is not a saloon but a converted commercial vehicle: a Sprinter turned into a motorhome by a German body builder, or a Vito converted into a shuttle. The buyer orders a certificate expecting a description of the complete vehicle, and receives the chassis one. We would rather say so beforehand. On a Mercedes-Benz we therefore ask up front whether the vehicle was converted after leaving the factory. If so, we obtain the base chassis certificate and tell you which document to request from the body builder, whose name usually appears on an additional plate. On passenger cars our checks focus instead on trim and tyre sizes, which vary a great deal between markets.
A Mercedes-Benz certificate is usually issued by the manufacturer’s type-approval department, centrally for the whole of Europe.
Where to find the chassis number (VIN) on a Mercedes-Benz
A certificate covers one vehicle only, identified by its chassis number (VIN). The safest place to read it is field E of the foreign registration document. On a Mercedes-Benz, it also appears:
- at the base of the windscreen, driver’s side, readable from outside
- on the manufacturer’s plate on the driver’s door pillar
- under a floor flap on the front passenger side
A VIN never contains the letters I, O or Q: mistaking one for a 1 or a 0 is enough to send the search astray.

What to watch out for on an imported Mercedes-Benz
Bodywork or multi-stage conversion
Motorhome, refrigerated box, tipper, ambulance: approval was granted in several stages. Mercedes-Benz then issues the certificate for the base chassis only; the conversion document comes from the body builder and must be requested from them.
Passenger car (M1) or light commercial (N1)?
The same Mercedes-Benz can exist as M1 (passenger car) and as N1 (van, with the rear bench and side windows removed). Different certificate, different taxation. Field J of the registration document settles it — check it in particular on Sprinter and Classe V.
Gross weight and driving licence category
Depending on the version, a Mercedes-Benz can exceed 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight and move into category N2: licence required, speed limits and roadworthiness regime all change. The weight is in field F.2 of the registration document.
Mercedes-Benz and the eCOC: what changes in 2026
Since 5 July 2026, Mercedes-Benz has been sending conformity data for its new vehicles to the approval authorities in eCOC format. Your used Mercedes-Benz is not affected: you need the ordinary COC, issued exactly as before. Paper and printouts of the eCOC remain accepted until 29 November 2026 at the latest.
